§ 01 // OVERVIEW

Four scripts, one language,
three thousand years.

Over more than three millennia the Egyptian language was committed to writing in four systems — hieroglyphic, hieratic, demotic and Coptic. In three parts, Prof. Jean Winand (University of Liège) asks how well each of them was actually suited to the task of transcribing Egyptian.

Part I surveys the four writing systems themselves. Part II turns to the hieroglyphs of the Graeco-Roman period and to their reception by Greek and Roman authors. Part III moves to digital humanities — Ramses Online and the Egyptological DH projects pursued at the University of Liège.

The seminar is held on site at the Hongo Campus of the University of Tokyo and is delivered in English.
